Everyone has heard the saying “don’t s#!t where you eat”, but at the same time it isn’t always as easy as it sounds. From personal experience, I’ve learned its not the best thing to do if your planning to stay long term at said job. But what do you do when you absolutely can’t resist ?

Take time to think, Here are a few simple guidelines to follow.

1. Is said employee a temp, intern or Assistant ?

If the answer is yes, than you have to consider what might seem easy for you (esp. if they aren’t around long-term) might not be the easiest for them. This is learning experience for them as they start in their new work environment, and as jolly as things may be it could also but a huge damper on the office experience for them. If casual turns to personal, are you ready to face the everyday work life with someone your involved with after you walk out the door ?

1. Do you work in a small or large environment ?

The number of co-workers around, believe it or not, plays a part in the office romance role. The smaller the office, the more people will talk and become nosey about your business. Are you ready for the constant questions about your personal life ? Even aside from cute jokes, there is also some who may not be approving of the situation and more out there to rain on your puppy love parade.

1. Last but not least, are you able to handle If things go sour ?

So the sunshine didn’t last forever but now your stuck with awkwardly with someone you have a past with. Imagine working in an office with your ex and all the mutual friends you’ve had who might have picked separate sides during your break-up. Its something along those lines.

A big example of this shift occurs mostly to women in finance who are frequently encouraged to move to administrative positions which leave them with much shorter hours. Are women being pushed out of male dominated careers due to the fact that sometimes over-time work is not an option ? Though these are statistics run through traditional views of marriage, work and home, when you look at the facts they may come off as a little surprising. 40% of all mothers are their families primary bread-winners. So basically mom is bringing home and the bacon and expecting to cook it as well. Yet, still cultural ideas about the traditional family plays a role in the way labor is divided. Studies have also shown that even when women are their families rock, they still spend 30% more time with their children than their husbands and make most of the families decisions.

These statements alone may explain why women continue to face inequalities in both earnings and professional status.

If we are investing so much into our business, shouldn’t our surroundings be a reflection of our effort ?  Having the right office space is like having the right apartment. As being our home away from home, we need to take the following key points into prespective : Location, Building, and Space. Is it a safe  easily accessible location for stff and clients ? Is the Building professional ? And is the space spacious enough for your business ?  Keep in mind as well that our offices are not only for our own use. Just like we have friends and family vist our homes, our clients and co-workers become our work family. And just like we like our home to be presentable to mom, our space should be the same for our clients. Whether you are in a cubicle or a closed door office, it is our duty  to make our place inviting.

Entrepreneur: A person who organizes, operates, and assumes the risk for a business venture. With that being the definition of the word, why do most people think of men when they hear it ? Why is it that in the year 2013, Women only get 4.2 percent of venture capital funding ? Why is it so hard for women to be taken seriously ?

After reading several articles on the struggles of a business woman, I couldn’t help but wonder how some of these views still exist in this day and age. Besides the articles themselves, what really interested me were the commentors. A male named Hank put in his opinion on business woman by saying “Women are more concerned about fashion, gardens and receipes than creating value”. Really Hank ? Why don’t you tell that to Martha stewart who was so concerned about the following that she turned it all into being one of the most successful business women of our time ! Who has not only gained success for being the modern day June Cleaver but for through a variety of business ventures, encompassing publishing, broadcasting, merchandising, and electronic commerce. After being dumbfounded by hanks comment, what really caught my eye is what another commentor michelle had to say.  Michelle said “guys are better in the business while woman are very passionate and take more focus”. Did a fellow female actually say that ? It is almost as if we are back in our school yard days fighting over whos better, girls or boys. Why is it so hard to be viewed as equals, especially in the professional environment ?

As for studies at the Standford Clayman Institue for Gender Research concluded “Women with non-tech backgrounds were given significantly lower ratings , But for men with non-tech backgrounds it could be used as an advantage”.  Along with that quote were more commentors talking about how women aren’t tech-savvy. Have they ever heard of Clara Shih ? Named by CNN to be one of the top 10 female entrepreneurs, started her own tech company “hearsay social” that works alongside her fellow alumni’s companies such as facebook and youtube.

Though it is a struggle, we must stay positive in knowing that one day soon this stereotype we have over us will change, if anything at least in the business world.

We are all guilty as charged for personal social media use. From the early days of MySpace (the horrors of the typical bathroom mirror selfie) to the more current hashtagging as if your life depended on it (twitter, tumblr, instragram, etc). And luckily start ups have made a wonderful home for themselves withen the social media epidemic. The world is hooked on these sites, why shouldn’t your business be ? What is a better way to reach out to the daily status updater who reads their newsfeed as if it’s the newspaper ?

Working for and or creating a start up of your own is not the easiest thing in the world. Ok, its far from boring and everyday is further progress and development. But you have to admit, yes its cool, yet at the same time we find ourselves spending long hours in the office. As said best by Lori Grenier, “Entrepreneurs as willing to work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week”. Here is what I learned to be great little rules to follow in order to survive those 80 hours !

1.       Appreciate your co-workers.

Think of your job as your home, would you want to come home only to be aggravated ? Is your family/partner/roommate/friends or even pet almost like a little team waiting for you, to work with you to enjoy your personal life? The few, mainly exhausted hours that we are home are used to be a pleasant/comfortable experience, right ? So why don’t we take that feeling back to the office ? Lets face it we spend most of our waking hours on the job surrounded by our co-workers. We can make things a better experience if we show our gratitude to one another every now and then. Even the smallest task deserves appreciation for a job well done. Everyone that is a part of the team deserves to feel important, encouraged, and told that they are doing a great job ! You never know how you could be making someone’s day with even the smallest compliment.

2.       Stay Inspired & Open Minded

Like ive mentioned before our long hours may tend to throw us in a boring rut every now and then. The biggest challenge is to let ourselves NOT get stuck ! Remember that creative and daring thinking that lead you on your start up journey ? Are you still as enthusiastic as when that light bulb in your head had its first sparks ? That is the feeling we need to chase, capture and keep alive. When are routines become mundane and entirely predictable week after week, there are some things we can do to keep us inspired. Its always good to keep an open mind and further our start up education with a cool lecture or even a fun workshop. The advantage of our city is that there are countless opportunities available ! Even if its something non-work related but more so of a hobby that you enjoy. Picking up a book you’ve wanted to read, listening to live music, as well as even the simplest stroll through a park. Keeping your brain active and happy simply pulls you out of your rut and keeps you inspired even if for a moment. Remember to always find the time to do the things you enjoy so you can give your best at work.

3.       Don’t beat yourself up too much, Its ok to make mistakes.

Even through failure, we gain. Nobody wants to hear that after a loss or a big mistake was found, but after recovering, reflect on the situation. Sometimes we just need to take a breath and ask ourselves the following : What lead me to make that decision ?, What exactly was wrong about it ?, What was the whole effect of that mistake?, and most important, How can I prevent that from happening again? We are human and once we learn to turn the negative into a positive, we will be much happier and much wiser.
